After 27 years of dedicated service, Don Black is beginning a new chapter as General Counsel for Overlake Medical Center & Clinics. Don’s departure from Ogden Murphy Wallace (OMW) marks the transition into a new era. During his time at OMW, his contributions have left a lasting and significant impact on the firm and a foundation for OMW to continue to be the preeminent mid-size law firm in the Pacific Northwest.

During Don’s tenure, OMW has grown from 48 attorneys to 65 attorneys. The firm has added depth within its practice areas diversifying its services for clients with the addition of multiple practice groups. Overall, the firm is well positioned for the next era of providing legal services.

Don Black’s career reflects dedication and commitment to servant leadership, rooted in his unique ability to bring people together. A Washington State native, Don earned his B.A. in Political Science from Whitman College before pursuing his passion for law at Seattle University School of Law in Tacoma. Graduating magna cum laude, he also served as Managing Editor of the Law Review with several OMW attorneys.

Following law school, Don clerked for Justice Charles W. Johnson of the Washington State Supreme Court for two years, gaining invaluable insight into the judicial process. In 1997, he joined OMW, drawn to the firm by a healthcare practice—a field he had aspired to specialize in, making his new role at Overlake particularly fitting.

From Associate to Managing Member and Chair: A Legacy of Leadership

Don's early career at OMW was shaped by many colleagues and mentors, particularly Doug Albright, who was instrumental in guiding him through the intricacies of healthcare law. Albright's influence, coupled with Don's drive and dedication, quickly allowed him to find early success as an attorney and at OMW. In 2003, Don became an equity member of the firm, and just three years later, he was appointed Managing Member, a role he held from 2006 to 2015, before being Chair from 2016 to 2024.

As Managing Member, Don was known for his forward-thinking approach and focus on ensuring OMW thrived as a mid-size law firm dedicated to understanding and servicing its clients. Recognizing shifts within the legal community, he partnered with Members in his generation to outline a vision for OMW one that embraced technological advancements, fostered a dynamic work environment, and attracted top talent.

In 2016, Don stepped into the role of Chair, focusing on the areas he was most passionate about: collaborating on the firm’s operations, recruiting talent, staying ahead of industry trends, promoting sustainability, and advocating for diversity. His growth-oriented mindset helped to drive OMW's expansion and the successful integration of new attorneys and firms. This included the addition of numerous associates, many of whom have become Members or are on track to do so, as well as attorneys from Miller Nash in 2013, 10 attorneys from Short Cressman & Burgess in 2018, three attorneys from Foster Garvey in 2020, two estate planning attorneys from Jeppesen Gray Sakai in 2023, and two more from Stoel Rives in 2024

Leaving a Lasting Legacy at OMW

Don's departure from OMW is bittersweet for the many colleagues and friends he leaves behind. While they are thrilled for what this next chapter holds for him, he will be missed for the leadership , mentorship, and friendship. Known for his mentorship and leading by example, Don has been a guiding influence for countless attorneys at the firm. His commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and leading through action has left an indelible mark on the firm's culture.

Reflecting on his time at OMW, Don shares memorable moments, from company retreats to winning the local softball league championships. He takes particular pride in the firm's resilience through the challenges of the 2008 recession and the COVID-19 pandemic, when not a single employee was laid off during those times. His ability to integrate new team members and guide the firm through such difficult periods stands as a testament to his leadership.

Looking to the Future for OMW

As Don steps into his new role at Overlake Medical Center & Clinics, he leaves OMW well-positioned to continue thriving. His leadership has established a solid foundation for the firm's future leaders, who are ready to carry his legacy forward. Jessica Jensen, the firm's first female Managing Member; Assistant Managing Member Daniel Kenny; and immediate past Managing Member Geoff Bridgman, who has agreed to serve as interim chair. Together they are poised to guide the team into the next chapter.

OMW continues to excel in its specialized practices, including Business, Litigation, Municipal Law, Health law, Labor and Employment, and Trusts and Estates. The firm is ready to embrace new opportunities and challenges remaining true to Don’s belief: "There’s no reason to do things the same way. Opportunities come from the people here so let them grow and evolve."

Although Don is moving on from OMW, he will always be part of the OMW family. His vision and steadfast, selfless leadership have been instrumental in strengthening the firm’s foundation and positioning OMW for the next phase of growth.
